A team from Queen Mary University of London found that drinking a samll quantity of beetroot juice offered a range of health benifits including a reduction in risk of a heart attack. The findings were presented at a conference of the Britsh Cardiovascular Society in Manchester.

Beetroot is rich with nitrate-oxides and when given heart and circulatory systems problems it lowered the circulating levels of white blood cells called the inflammatory monocyte, and the monocytes in the blood became more anti-inflammatory.

Beetroot juice also boosts the function of the cells lining the blood vessels that deteriorate during inflammation. While inflammation is vital to protect the body from injury and infections persistent inflammation can exacerbate the flurring of arteries making their condition worse while increasing the possibility of a heart attack. The research suggests that drinking beetroot juice is a positive way to introduce inorganic nitrate into our diet in order to interrupt harmful inflammation.
